Charismatically Queer: Led by Holy Spirit & Proud
Day One: Undoing The Distinction
“I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14 AMP.
At some point in our recent history, the above verse was skewed in favor of heterosexuality. Modern theology declares that we are fearfully and wonderfully made except when (fill in the blank). For churches these days, you are only fearfully and wonderfully made if you’re straight. God must’ve screwed up with those of us who are gay or identify as queer. According to this view, He get everybody else’s sexuality right except for ours.
For I am fearfully and wonderfully made and wonderful are your works, was the verse. Us. You. Me. We ARE the wonderful works described here. Mind you, this verse predates Jesus, outside of receiving the Holy Spirit, outside of modern Christian salvation rhetoric, outside of all these things; we remain fearfully and wonderfully made in our essence; in who we are. We were born fearfully and wonderfully made and one of the greatest adventures Holy Spirit will take you on, is one of discovering this wonderful work within ourselves. For those of us who are queer, what an even GREATER adventure is in store for us!
Holy Spirit is a powerful person with the ability to connect us back with our true selves. She leads us along paths that restore us back to ourselves. She holds our hands as we revisit parts of our identity we thought would be buried and rotting. Her breath and her touch bring life and light back into places of ourselves we were taught to hate. Her comfort draws us closer to ourselves and further along the adventure to reclaiming and discovering this ‘wonderful work’.
It is a lie to believe that to be queer is to be far away from Holy Spirit. It is a lie to tell another human being that they cannot be connected to God’s divine Spirit while being gay. I am here today to step boldly forward and ask that all of my queer Christians join me as we declare with our hearts and spirits that we can both be queer and led by Holy Spirit; and in fact the two are more One that we might have first thought.
